In case you need some help figuring out why Facebook would want to buy Instagram, this chart from 1000memories’ post, how many photos have ever been taken?, should help.
In a nut: photos are kind of a thing on Facebook, and Instagram is kind of a thing for photos.
Expeerience is a Pinterest-style Twitter for experiences. Users can snap photos and videos of their experiences and add them to collections, which can be configured to auto-sync with Facebook albums. Posts can be hash tagged and shared with the world for others to discover. Any photos or videos that appeal to a user can be collected into their own personal collections. Users can search the network to experience moments in time they may have missed or didn’t have the chance to capture in person.

Facebook has 845 million active users globally — about 54% of the world’s online population.
It’s also winning the social media popularity contest in terms of time spent on the site. Facebook users scrolled through their news feed, gawked at photos of friends and played games like Farmville for an average of 423 minutes in December of last year.
Tumblr came in second (151 minutes) and Pinterest third (80 minutes). To some surprise, MySpace (13 minutes) beat out Google (5 minutes). (via Pew: Recommendations on Social Media Not Yet Driving News Traffic)

Facebook Makes Up 52% of Social Sharing
Via AdAge:
AddThis, the sharing platform owned by Clearspring, is huge (or uuuuuugggggge, as Donald Trump would say). It’s used by more than 11 million sites, which gives it aggregate sharing data for more than 1.2 billion users — and a bird’s-eye view of the relative popularity and influence of everything from a Facebook Like to a click on a Google +1 button…
…For now, some notes and context on the graphics:
- According to AddThis data, Facebook accounts for 52.1% of sharing. Given the size of AddThis’ data set, that number’s probably a solid proxy for sharing across the entire web.
- Twitter was up 577% this year and accounts for 13.5% of sharing, per AddThis Analytics.
- Usage of Google’s +1 button grew in 2011 but has plateaued, according to AddThis. And if you want to feel bad for Digg and MySpace, just take a look at their depressing shrinkage numbers.
