For the first time, BBC iPlayer can be searched and controlled using hand-gestures and voice-recognition. Users with Kinect can shout the name of the category, the programme title or even “HD On”, and their wish is Xbox’s command. As for gestures, you can control the whole interface by simply waving your hand (via BBC iPlayer Launches on Microsoft Xbox Live)

KinectFusion: 3-D Models in Real Time by MicrosoftResearch

Microsofts official take on using the Kinect hardware for real-time 3D modelling:

KinectFusion takes live depth data from a moving depth camera and creates high-quality 3-D models in real time. The system enables a user to scan a whole room and its contents within seconds. As the space is explored, new views of the scene and objects are revealed and fused into a single 3-D model.

Here is an interesting augmented reality 3D Video Experiment. It uses an Xbox Kinect to map the video data, then uses the String Augmented Reality SDK to display what looks and feels like 3D video on the iPad, activated by a QR code. Pretty cool yeah?

Well, if they’d mapped the person being recorded with 2-3 Kinect’s the video quality would have been a whole lot better, and you’d have been able to walk a complete 360 degree path around the QR code seeing seamless 3D video… I suspect we’ll see that demo shortly! Kinect Puffersphere Has its Eye on You

The Kinect sees when a person walks up and the eye pops up on the sphere and then follows the person as they walk around the room.

The guys from The Technology Studio have a quick description of how they made it work here, and you can even grab the code over at Github.

Check out the Eye of Sauron version of the demo.

The sensor itself is actually quite incredible. As the video  shows, it throws out a bunch of little IR dots into the room and uses these to measure the full body positions of players. The great thing about this technique is that it seems to work remarkably well in low light. Not only were we able to play games with just one small lamp on in the corner of the room, but after calibration, Kinect ID was able to tell exactly who was standing in front of the sensor every time (via The Female Perspective of Computer Science: Kinect)
